St. Mary's Rehabilitation Centre |
|
Judging by the GDP per capita Malawi is considered to be among the ten poorest countries in the world; at the same time it bears enormous touristic potential due to its beautiful scenery, a splendid lake and incredibly friendly people, the reason why Malawi is called the 'Warm Heart of Africa'. AIDS, which is predominant in the continent of Africa, is a major factor contributing to the problems of this friendly nation with its approximately 12m population. According to statistics approximately 30-55% of Malawians are infected with HIV, many of them children. Parents dying of this pandemic leave behind their children and often there are no relatives left to look after them. The huge amount of orphaned children is posing a particular challenge to the Malawian society. The Government as well as the Sisters at St. Mary's Rehabilitation Centre are doing their very best to give at least some of the children the education, food, access to medical facilities and support they need to cope with their unfortunate destiny.
The centre currently accommodates around 130 children. However, a further almost 500 orphans are in home care with their relatives in the surrounding villages in order to strengthen the bond with remaining family members. All of the approximately 600 children get their education at St. Mary's own school and medical treatment at the small clinic.
LanGo helps St. Mary's with a donation every year of which 100% goes directly to the children without any
administrative
costs whatsoever. We also help the centre with the up-keep and maintenance of their web site.
